","hide_hero_image":false},"helper_people_group":{"title":"Authors","entities":[{"type":"dynamic","dynamic_person":{"site":2,"people":"13112"},"information":{"name":"","image":null,"role":"","biography":"","contact":{"twitter":"","facebook":"","email":"","phone":""}}}]},"page_layout":[{"acf_fc_layout":"layout_wysiwyg","_acfe_flexible_toggle":"","component_wysiwyg":{"content":"<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Details for a first-of-its-kind<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pilot program to safeguard motorists and wildlife were announced by U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/briefing-room\/biden-harris-administration-launches-first-ever-program-improve-safety-americas#:~:text=Through%20the%20Wildlife%20Crossings%20Pilot,round%20of%20awards%20funding%20this\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buttigieg last Tuesday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u2013 and not a moment too soon! <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wildlife Crossings Pilot Project, which was created through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will provide $350 million in grants over five years to states and communities.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The funds will be used to construct wildlife road crossings to prevent wildlife-vehicle collisions, and will also fund needed planning.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motorists kill as many as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/10\/1078901880\/our-roads-are-killing-wildlife-the-new-infrastructure-law-aims-to-help\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one million large animals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a year on U.S. roads. Collisions are dangerous for drivers, too. These accidents kill more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/gruesome-image-truckload-dead-animals-sparks-stark-warning-bad-news-1792216\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200 people and injure another 26,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each year.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With one in five species in the U.S. at risk of extinction, the disruption of wildlife habitats is among <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ipbes.net\/global-assessment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the nation\u2019s greatest conservation challenges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Connecting habitats by protecting wildlife movement and building highway crossing structures for wildlife enables species to migrate, access resources for survival, and better adapt to changing climates and landscapes.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This federal program will complement good work already going on around the country. Thus far, multiple states, including California, Florida, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Wyoming have passed legislation to protect wildlife corridors and promote wildlife crossings.<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of those states and more need to be ready to propose, plan and build new wildlife crossings in order to save America\u2019s wildlife.
